A phone only lasts a couple of years before it breaks or becomes obsolete. Although it's often just one part which killed it, we throw everything away since it's almost impossible to repair or upgrade.

Mars needs inhabitants-Project Mars One



Mars One estimates the cost of putting the first four people on Mars at about six billion US dollars.

Mars One is a not-for-profit foundation that will establish a permanent human settlement on Mars in 2023. Human settlement on Mars is possible today with existing technologies. Mars One mission plan integrates components that are well tested and readily available from industry leaders worldwide. The first footprint on Mars and lives of the crew thereon will captivate and inspire generations; it is this public interest that will help finance this human mission to Mars.

The Mars One mission plan consists of cargo missions and unmanned preparation of a habitable settlement, followed by human landings. In the coming years, a demonstration mission, communication satellites, two rovers and several cargo missions will be sent to Mars. These missions will set up the outpost where the human crew will live and work.

The mission design takes into account the expansion of the human colony where a new crew arrive every two years.

Mars One will select and train the human crew for permanent settlement. The search for Astronauts began in April 2013. More than 78,000 registered for the selection programme within two weeks of its launch.

Android’s next version 4.4 named after Nestle’s chocolate treat, Android Kitkat.


The Next version of Android (Android 4.4) will be called Android Kitkat  and not Key Lime pie.

"Android is the operating system that powers over 1 billion smartphones and tablets. Since these devices make our lives so sweet, each Android version is named after a dessert: Cupcake, Donut, Eclair, Froyo, Gingerbread, Honeycomb, Ice Cream Sandwich, and Jelly Bean. As everybody finds it difficult to stay away from chocolate we decided to name the next version of Android after one of our favorite chocolate treats, Kitkat®!"

Google has made a deal  with NestlĂ© to use the name ‘KitKat’ for its next version of Android.
Despite the partnership, Google representatives were keen to point out that this was not a “money-changing-hands kind of deal”, although Nestle does plan to sell more than 50 million chocolate bars featuring the Android mascot on its wrapper. The KitKats will ship to 19 key markets including the UK, US, Brazil, India, Japan and Russia.
Another big announcement was made by Sunadar Pichai, Head of Android,
“We now have over 1 Billion Android activations and hope this guy in front of the building keeps that momentum going,” said Mr Pichai.

Android is now bigger and 1 billion strong! It has grown so much faster and has managed to compete against Apple’s iOS unlike any other mobile OS out there.

Engineered bacteria make fuel from sunlight

In a bid to find an substitute to fossil fuels as raw material for the chemical industry, scientists have engineered a bacteria which could help grow chemical precursors for fuels and plastics.

“Most chemical feedstocks come from petroleum and natural gas, and we need other sources,” assistant professor of chemistry at University of California, Davis and lead author on the study Shota Atsumi said.

Biological reactions are good at forming carbon-carbon bonds, using carbon dioxide as a raw material for reactions powered by sunlight,called photosynthesis, and cyanobacteria, also known as “blue-green algae,” have been doing it for more than 3 billion years, the Science Daily reported.

The challenge is to get the cyanobacteria to make significant amounts of chemicals that can be readily converted to chemical feedstocks.

With support from Japanese chemical manufacturer Asahi Kasei Corp., Atsumi’s lab at UC Davis has been working on introducing new chemical pathways into the cyanobacteria.

The researchers, working a step at a time, built up a three-step pathway that allows the cyanobacteria to convert carbon dioxide into 2,3 butanediol, a chemical that can be used to make paint, solvents, plastics and fuels.

“Because enzymes may work differently in different organisms, it is nearly impossible to predict how well the pathway will work before testing it in an experiment,” Atsumi said.

After three weeks growth, the cyanobacteria yielded 2.4 grams of 2,3 butanediol per liter of growth medium – the highest productivity yet achieved for chemicals grown by cyanobacteria and with potential for commercial development, Atsumi added.

Atsumi hopes to tune the system to increase productivity further and experiment with other products, while corporate partners explore scaling up the technology.

The US Department of Energy has set a goal of obtaining a quarter of industrial chemicals from biological processes by 2025.

The study was published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Communication has evolved massively in the recent past. From landline phones to e-mails, and text messaging, the world of telecommunication has now become an absolute essential part of our lives. Today, a switched off phone is the cause of frustration and often makes people feel handicapped.

An average cellphone can take atleast 6 to 7 hours to fully get charged. But now, a breakthrough by an 18-year-old science student might enable mobile phones and other batteries to be charged within seconds.

Saratoga-resident Eesha Khare made the breakthrough by creating a small super capacitor that can fit inside a cell phone battery and enable ultra-fast electricity transfer and storage, delivering a full charge in 20-30 seconds instead of several hours.
